CONTACT USAbout Skutta Girls Program
Originally from Fitzroy Crossing, Skutta is a familiar Kimberley Kriol word which derived from the word skite which in Australia means to “boast”. Skiter then evolved to Skutta or Skudda so girls and boys who exhibited confidence in themselves and stood out from the crowd were often called “skutta bloke” or skutta girl as they were perceived to be skiting or being a skiter. Today the word Skutta has evolved into a positive word and is more aligned to the word deadly which is another Kimberley Kriol word for exceptional or outstanding and even giving approval. Its used as word to encourage youth and give them confidence and build their self esteem.
What we want to do
A fun interactive photo shoot for girls aged 11-17yrs to model fashion accessories and upcycled Denim (shorts and jean) using off cuts of locally produced printed fabric.
Why we want to do it?
To create an opportunity for local female youth to participate in something different while building their confidence and self esteem. Participants have fun with hair and fashion and to see themselves differently through this process (in a new light). Encouraging participants to be proud of who they are and where they come from which touches on social and emotional wellbeing and building young females up from the inside out. Participants to get digital copies of their photos. This fashion photo shoot will also highlight the local First Nations business women and their locally made products (masks, textiles, bags, earrings). This will also highlight non formal pathways to employment and expose the youth to role models working in this creative arts industry and who are business women in the Kimberley Region.
